| Our first home I remember as a child was a wonderful log home in the country in BEMIDJI, MN. However, in 3rd grade we sold the farm and became renters and trailer house owners until I was in High School. In 1958, as a junior in high school, I convinced my parents to sell the trailer house we lived in even if we had to take a loss and buy our 2nd home. This was the beginning of my most wonderful and exciting real estate career!
In 1963, I graduated from Union College, LINCOLN, NE with a Bachelor of Science in Business. After college, I taught one year at Union College, and then my husband and I taught 2 years at Glendale Union Academy in GLENDALE, CA. Then it was on to new careers for both of us. Bruce became a cropduster, and I truly got into real estate. We spent time in CARSON CITY, NV; KLAMATH FALLS, OR; OTHELLO, WA; LEXINGTON, NE; and LONGMONT, CO.
Eight years we spent in STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO where I managed SunRay Land Development at the base of the mountain then called Mt. Werner Ski Area. Our first afternoon in STEAMBOAT, we invested in land "with no money down" and built and retained several rentals. However, our first home was a little cottage on 4 acres at the North end of Boyd Lake in LOVELAND, CO. We paid $10,000 for it. At the time, we were just finishing up a season of cropdusting and using Kechter Rd just West of Timberline Rd in FORT COLLINS, CO as our gravel runway that summer. We never lived in it, went to STEAMBOAT for our first winter, and sold it the next year for $13,000. "Shoulda kept it, huh!" Also we traded a lot under the gondola for a P-51 Mustang at the time. "Shoulda kept one or the other, huh!" Fun and exciting was learning to fly and soloing a T-34 Navy Trainer along with other planes off the STEAMBOAT AIRPORT.
In 1975, the two boys, Jack and Hans, and I moved to FORT COLLINS, CO, and I sold real estate for Russ Hunter Realty mostly working a new home project started by Max Hoffman, my mentor, called Countryside Park. This was a novel concept of converting a mobile home park over to homes. Quite often I was able to facilitate getting buyers out of their mobile homes and into a home - most rewarding because of my trailer house, now known as "mobile home" background.
Since 1977, I have been a Broker Associate in GREELEY, CO. One of the best professional experiences has been teaching for Jones Real Estate College over the years preparing students for their state exam.
In 1980, I found a secluded lot in the older Glenmere area of GREELEY, CO and was the general contractor in the building of a log home. This not only was a very enjoyable experience, but it was also a real learning and rewarding experience in real estate. My last real estate project has been finding a 1935 Arts & Craft style cabin in ESTES PARK, CO and refurbishing it. It has also been a catalyst in spreading out into the mountain region again. My motto: "Everyone should live in the mountains once in their lifetime!" Go to: vrbo.com/#71414
Also fun and rewarding has been serving the GREELEY Area Association of Realtors first as Director for 3 years, then Treasurer 1988-1989; Secretary 1989-1990; President-Elect 1990-1991; President 1991-1992.
Another motto: "Destined to be an Old Woman with no Regrets!" - "Just shoulda kept all that real estate along the way, huh!" - For all your earthly needs, call joanne e. 9 7 0 . 3 7 1 . 2 3 6 6
